Therapy for Sexual Trauma in NYC
What happened to you may be in the past, but your body and relationships may still be responding to it.
You learned how to survive. Now you’re trying to figure out how to feel safe again.
Maybe you’ve gotten good at pushing things down, staying in control, or disconnecting from what you feel. You may question your reactions, ignore your body’s signals, or go along with things even when something doesn’t feel right.
These responses may have helped you survive what happened. Now, they may make it harder to trust yourself, set boundaries, feel comfortable with intimacy, or know what you want.
Sexual trauma can shape how you relate to your body, emotions, relationships, and yourself. Trauma-informed therapy can help you understand these patterns and reconnect with yourself in a way that feels safe and manageable.
Whether you’ve experienced childhood sexual abuse, exploitation, sexual assault, or domestic violence, sexual trauma and its effects can look differently for each individual. You might notice it in the way you feel, think, or interact with others.
You might benefit from therapy for sexual trauma if…
You have difficulty trusting your instincts
You feel disconnected from your body or emotions
You’re caught in patterns of guilt, shame, or self-doubt
You struggle to set or communicate sexual or relationship boundaries (it’s difficult to say “no”)
You experience relationship anxiety, avoidance, or difficulty trusting others
You feel disconnected from your sexuality, desire, or experience fear around intimacy
You’re tired of understanding what happened intellectually but still feeling affected by it
Working together, we’ll explore how your experiences may still be showing up in your life today while creating space for you to reconnect with your body, your emotions, and your own sense of what feels right.
Start Therapy for Sexual Trauma in NYC today!
What if you could go from…
Feeling disconnected from your body → To feeling more present and connected
Questioning your instincts → To trusting yourself more
Feeling guilty for setting boundaries → To knowing that your boundaries matter
Ignoring your needs → To recognizing and communicating what you want
Feeling anxious or guarded in relationships → To building relationships that feel safer and more authentic
Knowing you “should” be okay → To actually feeling more at ease in yourself
Let’s replace “Is this okay?” with:
“Does this feel okay to me?”
Sexual trauma therapy isn’t about forcing yourself to revisit painful experiences before you’re ready. We’ll start by creating a space where you can feel safe, supported, and in control of your own process.
We’ll spend time getting to know you, your experiences, and what you’re hoping to change. Depending on your needs, we’ll develop goals to guide our work together.
Each session, you’re invited to come as you are - there’s no scripts or expectations to have everything figure out. I’ll meet you where you are and we’ll go from there…
We might explore how your experiences have shaped the way you relate to your body, emotions, and relationships.
We can identify survival patterns that once helped protect you but may no longer be serving you.
We might practice noticing your body’s signals and distinguishing between fear, intuition, discomfort, and desire.
We can work on boundaries, communication, and trusting yourself to make choices that feel right for you.
We might use CBT and ACT strategies to work with anxiety, shame, self-critical thoughts, and avoidance.

Meet Your NYC Sexual Trauma Therapist
Julie Koven, Ph.D.
Hi! I’m Julie, a licensed psychologist specializing in helping adults heal from the lasting impact of sexual trauma. For the past 10 years, I have worked with adults navigating the effects of traumatic sexual and relational experiences, including difficulties with trust, boundaries, intimacy, and self-worth.
As a psychologist and professor, I’m passionate about not just getting you from Point A to Point B but also helping you to understand how your body and mind have responded to trauma and what options you have moving forward. I believe in empowering clients with knowledge so that you can exercise autonomy in and out of therapy.
You deserve to feel safe in your body, trust yourself, and live a life where you aren’t held back by the past. Let’s work together to get there.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
You might benefit from sexual trauma therapy if past experiences are still affecting how you feel about yourself, your body, your relationships, or your ability to trust yourself.
You may notice anxiety, shame, difficulty with boundaries or intimacy, feeling disconnected from your body, relationship difficulties, or a tendency to ignore your own needs. You don't have to identify your experience as “traumatic” or have a specific diagnosis to seek support.
-
No. You are in control of what you share and when you share it.
Trauma therapy does not require you to share details of traumatic events. We can begin by focusing on what you’re experiencing now and how it’s impacting your self-worth, relationships, or work. We can gradually explore the past when, and if, it feels helpful. Your pace and comfort matter.
“You do trauma therapy without making it feel like trauma therapy.” – Current client, with permission.

A trauma-informed approach recognizes that your past experiences can shape how you feel, think, behave, and relate to yourself and others. Experiences such as dysfunctional family dynamics, religious harm, toxic or unsafe environments, and identity-based oppression can influence the coping strategies and relationship patterns you develop to protect yourself.
Rather than focusing on what is “wrong” with you, trauma therapy helps you understand where these patterns came from and why they may no longer be serving you.
-
Together, we’ll work on building self-trust, understanding your emotional and nervous system responses, and recognizing the difference between a trauma response and your intuition. The goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help you feel more grounded, make intentional choices, and develop ways of relating that feel more authentic to you.
I believe in empowering clients with knowledge and choices to maximize their autonomy and comfort. You’re encouraged to bring whatever helps you feel regulated to session – a fidget toy, blanket, stuffed animal, or even your pet. I’ll also provide options throughout therapy and invite your feedback so you can have an active role in shaping your treatment and advocating for your needs, both in and outside of therapy.

My rate for a 50-minute therapy session is $225. I dedicate a portion of my caseload to sliding scale spots to make therapy more accessible to clients. If cost is a barrier, please inquire about my sliding scale option.
I am in-network with Aetna. For other insurance plans, I am considered to be an out-of-network mental health provider.
I am happy to provide monthly superbills for you to submit to insurance. I recommend checking with your insurance about your out-of-network mental health benefits as many of my clients are able to get reimbursement from their insurance.
Why you might consider working with an out-of-network therapist:
No limitations on sessions. We can meet without worrying about insurance cutting off the length, frequency, or duration of therapy.
It helps me keep your information confidential. No need to submit your diagnosis or notes to insurance for treatment.
Therapy is personal! It should be individualized and flexible to your needs and should not be dictated by insurance.
