Therapy for Trauma & Relationships in NYC

LGBTQ+ and Non-Monogamy Affirming Therapy

You deserve to feel seen and empowered.

Feeling stuck in patterns that hold you back?

For years, you’ve been living in survival mode, carrying the impact of childhood trauma, emotionally unsafe relationships, burnout, or chronic stress that continues to shape how you relate to yourself and others.

Trauma and relationship therapy can help you understand the protective patterns you developed and process unresolved experiences, so you can feel more secure in your relationships and more grounded in your body.

This might sound familiar…

  • You only show parts of yourself that feel safe or acceptable.

  • You feel like you’re too much and not enough at the same time.

  • You feel tense when you try to ask for what you need, so it feels easier to live in the discomfort.

  • You second guess, overanalyze situations, and continue to feel anxious.

  • You avoid conflict to keep the peace, but you feel the resentment building inside yourself.

  • You feel burnt out from trying so hard to please others, but you still feel like you did something wrong.

Trauma and relationship therapy can help you separate your trauma response from your intuition so that you can heal and learn to trust yourself.

Meet Julie Koven, Ph.D.

Trauma and Relationship Therapist in NYC

Virtual therapy across New York and New Jersey

Hi, I’m Julie Koven (she/her)! I’m a licensed psychologist, specializing in helping adults heal from the impact of trauma, so they can feel connected to their bodies and emotions, communicate their needs, and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

As someone familiar with feelings of otherness, I am passionate about creating a grounding and safe environment that is LGBTQ+ affirming, culturally sensitive, and sex-positive (ENM & kink friendly). You deserve to feel seen and understood.

My approach is trauma-informed, relational, and collaborative. We’ll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, talk through the process, and create a therapy experience that aligns with your personal needs and goals.

Therapy Services

  • Scenic view of a mountain landscape during sunrise or sunset with a winding road through lush green hills and a cloud formation with sun rays shining through.

    THERAPY FOR SEXUAL TRAUMA

Whether you’ve experienced sexual trauma in childhood or recent years, you might notice the impact on your relationships, in your body, or how you feel about yourself. Together, we’ll work to build safety, make meaning of your experiences, and reconnect with healthy supports.

  • A scenic view of a river surrounded by trees and mountains during sunset, with the sky painted in orange and pink hues.

    NONTRADITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Wondering if there’s more than one “right” way to do relationships? If you’re curious about non-monogamy or navigating poly challenges in existing relationships, therapy can help you explore your desires, clarify your needs, and communicate more effectively.

  • Sunflowers blooming in a vast field during sunset, with a partly cloudy sky.

    LGBTQ+ THERAPY

Looking for a therapist who gets queerness without making it “the issue”? Together, we can explore sexual and/or gender identity, navigate the unique challenges of being queer in a heteronormative society, and build confidence in living authentically.

  • A scenic mountain landscape with a dirt trail surrounded by green trees and shrubs, with mountain peaks in the background and the sun shining through the trees.

    THERAPY FOR ANXIETY

Constantly overthinking? Stuck in patterns of people pleasing, conflict avoidance, or self-criticism? In therapy, we’ll explore the “why” and bolster skills to manage the negative thoughts and uncomfortable sensations that come with anxiety.

  • Sunset over rugged mountain peaks reflected in a calm lake, surrounded by evergreen trees.

    THERAPY FOR OCD

Feeling exhausted and consumed by unwanted thoughts, mental images, or urges to check? Rituals and reassurance-seeking may provide temporary relief, but they perpetuate the cycle. Therapy can help you make changes to manage the impact of OCD on your daily life.
