Therapy for Trauma & Relationships in NYC
LGBTQ+ and Non-Monogamy Affirming Therapy
You deserve to feel seen and empowered.
Feeling stuck in patterns that hold you back?
For years, you’ve been living in survival mode, carrying the impact of childhood trauma, emotionally unsafe relationships, burnout, or chronic stress that continues to shape how you relate to yourself and others.
Trauma and relationship therapy can help you understand the protective patterns you developed and process unresolved experiences, so you can feel more secure in your relationships and more grounded in your body.
This might sound familiar…
You only show parts of yourself that feel safe or acceptable.
You feel like you’re too much and not enough at the same time.
You feel tense when you try to ask for what you need, so it feels easier to live in the discomfort.
You second guess, overanalyze situations, and continue to feel anxious.
You avoid conflict to keep the peace, but you feel the resentment building inside yourself.
You feel burnt out from trying so hard to please others, but you still feel like you did something wrong.
Trauma and relationship therapy can help you separate your trauma response from your intuition so that you can heal and learn to trust yourself.
Meet Julie Koven, Ph.D.
Trauma and Relationship Therapist in NYC
Virtual therapy across New York and New Jersey
Hi, I’m Julie Koven (she/her)! I’m a licensed psychologist, specializing in helping adults heal from the impact of trauma, so they can feel connected to their bodies and emotions, communicate their needs, and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
As someone familiar with feelings of otherness, I am passionate about creating a grounding and safe environment that is LGBTQ+ affirming, culturally sensitive, and sex-positive (ENM & kink friendly). You deserve to feel seen and understood.
My approach is trauma-informed, relational, and collaborative. We’ll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, talk through the process, and create a therapy experience that aligns with your personal needs and goals.

THERAPY FOR SEXUAL TRAUMA
Whether you’ve experienced sexual trauma in childhood or recent years, you might notice the impact on your relationships, in your body, or how you feel about yourself. Together, we’ll work to build safety, make meaning of your experiences, and reconnect with healthy supports.
-

NONTRADITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Wondering if there’s more than one “right” way to do relationships? If you’re curious about non-monogamy or navigating poly challenges in existing relationships, therapy can help you explore your desires, clarify your needs, and communicate more effectively.
-

LGBTQ+ THERAPY
Looking for a therapist who gets queerness without making it “the issue”? Together, we can explore sexual and/or gender identity, navigate the unique challenges of being queer in a heteronormative society, and build confidence in living authentically.
-

THERAPY FOR ANXIETY
Constantly overthinking? Stuck in patterns of people pleasing, conflict avoidance, or self-criticism? In therapy, we’ll explore the “why” and bolster skills to manage the negative thoughts and uncomfortable sensations that come with anxiety.
-

THERAPY FOR OCD
Feeling exhausted and consumed by unwanted thoughts, mental images, or urges to check? Rituals and reassurance-seeking may provide temporary relief, but they perpetuate the cycle. Therapy can help you make changes to manage the impact of OCD on your daily life.
What People Are Saying:
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming,
but you don’t have to figure it out alone.
How It Works:
1. Book a free consultation call!
In a 15-20 minute phone call, we’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re looking for, and how I can help. Let’s see if we’re a good fit!
2. Schedule your initial appointment.
In our first session, I’ll offer guiding questions to learn more about you and the experiences that have shaped who you are and what’s bringing you to therapy today.
3. Start your therapy journey :)
After the initial appointment, we’ll review what we’ve discussed so far and identify directions to guide the work that we will do in our weekly therapy sessions.

I provide virtual therapy across New York & New Jersey through a secure, HIPAA complaint telehealth platform. Clients find this to be incredibly convenient and just as effective as in-person.
If you prefer in-person therapy, I might not be the best fit for you and that’s ok! If you’re hesitant about online therapy, feel free to schedule a free consultation, and we can discuss your concerns.
-
My rate for a 50-minute therapy session is $225. I dedicate a portion of my caseload to sliding scale spots to make therapy more accessible to clients. If cost is a barrier, please inquire about my sliding scale option.

I am in-network with Aetna. For other insurance plans, I am considered to be an out-of-network mental health provider.
I am happy to provide monthly superbills for you to submit to insurance. I recommend checking with your insurance about your out-of-network mental health benefits as many of my clients are able to get reimbursement from their insurance.
Why you might consider working with an out-of-network therapist:
No limitations on sessions. We can meet without worrying about insurance cutting off the length, frequency, or duration of therapy.
It helps me keep your information confidential. No need to submit your diagnosis or notes to insurance for treatment.
Therapy is personal! It should be individualized and flexible to your needs and should not be dictated by insurance.
-
I typically meet with clients once a week for a 50-minute therapy session. If your needs change, we can adjust the frequency.
