Therapy for
Anxiety in NYC
You don’t have to live on high alert.
Learn to feel more grounded in yourself.
Living with anxiety can feel like always waiting for something to go wrong.
You might find yourself replaying conversations, anticipating what could go wrong, or second-guessing decisions long after you’ve made them. Your body may feel tense or on edge, even when you know logically that you’re safe.
Anxiety can affect more than your thoughts. It can impact your sleep, concentration, decision-making, relationships, and the way that you feel about yourself.
Therapy for anxiety offers a space to understand what’s driving these patterns while developing practical tools to respond differently to anxious thoughts and uncomfortable sensations. It can help you to gain confidence in your ability to manage anxiety and feel less overwhelmed by it.
Whether your anxiety shows up as overthinking, people pleasing, conflict avoidance, self-criticism, or feeling constantly on edge, it can affect the way you experience yourself and your relationships.
You might benefit from therapy for anxiety if…
You’re constantly overthinking or second-guessing yourself
You replay conversations and worry about how others perceive you
Your body feels tense, restless, or constantly on alert
You struggle with people pleasing or avoid difficult conversations
You feel like you’re not doing enough but also feel irritable from burnout
You’re avoiding situations that make you feel anxious but then you’re left feeling unfulfilled
Working together, we'll explore what your anxiety is trying to protect you from while helping you build new ways of responding, so you can feel more grounded and content in your choices.

What if you could go from…
Constantly overthinking → Feeling calmer and more grounded in the present
Second-guessing every decision → Clarifying your values to help you trust yourself
Avoiding conflict → To communicating what you need
People pleasing to feel safe → To setting boundaries without overwhelming guilt
Living in “what if?” → To feeling more comfortable sitting with uncertainty
Feeling controlled by anxious thoughts → Responding to them with greater flexibility
Let’s replace “What if something goes wrong?” with: “I can handle what comes next.”
What therapy for anxiety might look like…
Anxiety therapy isn't about forcing yourself to stop worrying or telling yourself to “just relax.” We'll work to understand why anxiety shows up and develop strategies to respond to it.
We’ll spend time getting to know you, your experiences, and what you’d like your life to look like. Depending on your needs, we’ll develop goals to guide our work together.
Each session, you’re invited to come as you are - there’s no scripts or expectations. I’ll meet you where you are and we’ll go from there…
We might explore how past experiences have shaped the way you respond to uncertainty, conflict, or perceived rejection.
We can identify and examine patterns of overthinking, avoidance, reassurance-seeking, people pleasing, or self-criticism.
We might use CBT strategies to identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that are holding you back.
We can use ACT tools to make room for uncomfortable emotions and uncertainly, so that you can make decisions based on your values rather than avoiding anxiety.
We might tune into how anxiety feels in your body and practice relaxation strategies to help you feel grounded.
The goal isn't to never feel anxious. It's to feel more capable of handling anxiety without letting it dictate your choices.
Meet Your NYC Anxiety Therapist
Julie Koven, Ph.D.
Hi! I’m Julie, a licensed psychologist specializing in anxiety, trauma, and relationships. For over 10 years, I have supported adults who come in feeling stuck in cycles of overthinking, people pleasing, self-doubt, and avoidance.
As a psychologist and professor, I’m passionate about not just getting you from Point A to Point B but also helping you to understand why your anxiety developed, what your nervous system is responding to, and how you can make changes to your thoughts and behaviors to feel more grounded, less frozen, and more confident in your choices.
My approach combines insight-oriented therapies, including psychodynamic and emotion-focused, with skill-focused therapies, such as CBT and ACT, so that you can develop practical tools to manage anxiety as it comes up and gain insight to feel more empowered in implementing changes.

Yes, if past experiences are contributing to your anxiety, a trauma-informed approach can help you understand those connections while also addressing the anxiety you're experiencing now.
However, anxiety is not always caused by trauma. Anxiety can have many contributing factors, including genetics / family history of mental health issues, life experiences, stress, relationships, and sociocultural factors.
-
Yes. Therapy can help you understand what fuels overthinking and develop different ways of responding to anxious thoughts.
Rather than trying to force yourself to stop thinking, we can work on noticing thought patterns, tolerating uncertainty, and choosing where to put your attention.

My rate for a 50-minute therapy session is $225. I dedicate a portion of my caseload to sliding scale spots to make therapy more accessible to clients. If cost is a barrier, please inquire about my sliding scale option.
I am in-network with Aetna. For other insurance plans, I am considered to be an out-of-network mental health provider.
I am happy to provide monthly superbills for you to submit to insurance. I recommend checking with your insurance about your out-of-network mental health benefits as many of my clients are able to get reimbursement from their insurance.
Why you might consider working with an out-of-network therapist:
No limitations on sessions. We can meet without worrying about insurance cutting off the length, frequency, or duration of therapy.
It helps me keep your information confidential. No need to submit your diagnosis or notes to insurance for treatment.
Therapy is personal! It should be individualized and flexible to your needs and should not be dictated by insurance.
